Bermuda - Mother's Day 2004

With the folks in Bermuda for an extended stay we spent Mother's Day on the island this year. This was a low-key visit - for more detailed accounts check out the October 2002 and June 2003 travelogues.

It was clear on approach that cruise season was already in full swing, with one big ship squeezing into St. George's harbor and another on its way back to open water.

Railway Trail

After the big blow of Hurricane Fabian last September I expected the island to be stripped of everything green. It looks like the vegetation is used to being whipped up - things were a little bare in spots but it's not like Bermuda's a desert island.

Caves

Our big new adventure this trip was a visit to the caves beneath the Grotto Bay hotel. They may be claustrophobic for some (it helps not to think about the guest rooms directly overhead) but the caves are quiet and magical, with crystal-clear water and the eternal drip of stalactites under construction.

Abbot's Cliff Trail

On Mother's Day we trekked through the fields and brush behind the folks' house to the cliffs overlooking Harrington Sound.

We completed the circuit along the North Shore Road, passing my favorite streetcorner - I just love the mix of colors on that block.

Just a relaxing weekend, nothing too exciting, pretty much exactly what we were looking for. Julia even made it to the island in time to complete the spare.
On the approach to DCA we passed right over FedEx field... hey, I can see my seat from here.
